A Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada can sponsor his or her spouse, common-law partner, conjugal partner, dependent child (including adopted child), parents, or grandparents to become permanent residents. People sponsoring their family members in this category are responsible for supporting their arriving family members for a requred period and they must ensure that the sponsored family members do not seek government assistance.

Spouses and Dependent Children:

A Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident can sponsor his or her spouse, common-law or conjugal partner, or dependent children who live inside or outside Canada. To qualify under this category the person must meet the sponsorship criteria as a sponsor, and the applicants for permanent residence must go through medical, criminal and background screening.

Other Eligible Relatives:

A Canadian citizen or permanent resident can sponsor his or her parents, grandparents and other qualified relatives for permanent resedence in Canada. Like other family class applicants, people in this category also have to go through medical, criminal and background checks.
